Description

Folder contains research notes made by the natural historian Gaimard in his journal and copied by Freycinet recording a physical examination of a Maori chief, Piro, who had arrived from the Bay of Islands ('Baie a'ilens') in Port Jackson accompanying Samuel Marsden toward the end of 1819. Includes detailed measurements of every part of Piro's body, both in metric and imperial units. Also included is extract taken from Southey's History of Brazil concerning the tribesmen of the Madeira River who keep shrunken heads ('tetes condensees') of their enemies, together with a short description by Gaimard, and copied by Freycinet of a Maori head which he had acquired.
