Description

Prime minister John Key and Finance Minister Bill English stand together on a ship nemed 'NZ Inc Planning' which has run aground on a reef. The PM tells Bill English to 'just smile and wave' and they might 'eventually float free...' Context: The Prime Minister John Key is developing a reputation for 'smiling and waving' as a response to serious problems.' On 5th October 2011 the container ship 'Rena' became stuck on the Astrolabe reef off the coast of Tauranga. It is spilling oil, threatening coastlines and killing seabirds. Authorities are racing to get the oil and the containers off the ship before it breaks up but the weather is frustrating efforts.
