Description

The cartoon is entitled 'Obama Canute' and shows President Obama as King Canute being dislodged from his throne by a huge sea that represents 'Middle East history.' His throne is being supported from behind by Israel's President Benjamin Netanyahu. Context: The United States has traditionally for political reasons been very supportive of the state of Israel but now Palestine is asserting her right to statehood. Their application to the UNs Security Council, pencilled in for September 23rd, will be rebuffed by an American veto. But if they then go to the UN General Assembly, which seems likely sooner or later, the Palestinians will win an overwhelming majority. (The Economist September 24th 2011)
