Shows a profile portrait, in silhouette, of the Methodist missionary, Rev John H Bumby, who drowned in the Hokianga on 26 June 1840. He stands, presumably at the pulpit, with a book, his right forearm and index finger pointing upwards. He wears a wide-lapelled double-breasted coat and minister's collar.
Commemorative text below the image reads: 'Drowned near Ho Kianga, New Zealand, by the upsetting of a Canoe, containing himself and twelve natives, who all shared the same Melancholy Fate, on the 26th June, 1840.'
