Description

The cartoon shows several Labour Party politicians in a battered boat with 'Capital Gains Tax' printed on its sail; at the helm is leader Phil Goff who shouts 'Here's hoping we're welcomed with open arms!' In the sea bobs a buoy with a sign pointing to the 'election'. Context - Labour plans to introduce a capital gains tax if they win the 2011 election. The capital gains tax is expected to include some low level exemptions for personal assets, as well as an exemption for the family home. But other than those limited exemptions, it is expected to be broad-based and include residential rental houses, rural property, commercial property, shares, businesses and collectibles. (Source: Stuff 8 July 2011) There is also a reference to A boat full of Sri Lanken Tamils supposedly want to come to New Zealand as refugees has been told by Prime Minister John Key that they are 'not welcome'. The pm has been accused of 'scaremongering' and that he 'has misjudged his response'. (Source: Nelson Mail 13 July 2011).
