Description

Members of a brass band standing around a grave with their instruments, circa 1890. The horns and trombones have been designed with the bell pointing over the shoulder in order to control the volume. Other instruments include cymbals and drums. A horn lies at the foot of the grave. Taken by unidentified photographer.

`According to Algernon Rose (Talks with Bandsmen, 1895) trombonists' propensity for playing too loud was the reason that one conductor, about 1850, employed trombones designed with the bell pointing over the shoulder. Over-the-shoulder trombones were also used in at least one American band (the Boston Brass Band) to match the design of the other instruments, which were all over-the-shoulder horns [in 1851]'.
