Description

Shows a group of five Maori men preparing food. They wear cloaks and full moko. Two are seated with their backs to the viewer, on either side of a central steaming cooking pot which one is stirring. Two men in cloaks stand watching them, and one figure at the left is about to cut up a pig (or sheep). There is a basket of gourds at the left behind one of the seated men. A pig stands in the right foreground tied to a peg in the ground. Behind and to the right a cloaked woman holds an infant in front of a pitched tent. More figures and pigs are standing in the background at left and right.

Watercolour attributed by the vendor to John A Gilfillan, depicting a scene in the area in which he lived. It appears to be by a more primitive hand, perhaps his son John Gordon Gilfillan.
