The Acheron in the distance, dwarfed by the towering mountains of The Narrows in Milford Sound, with Yates Point on the left. In the right foreground is Anita Bay. A large Maori war canoe in the right foreground
The Narrows lead into the inner part of the fiord. The Maori canoe is likely to have been a piece of artistic licence to give the scale of the fiord. There was no mention in the account of the Acheron's visit to Milford Sound of any encounter with Maori.
