[Evans, Frederick John Owen] 1815-1885 :New Zealand - Middle Island. Entering Milford Sound in H M Acheron - Captn J. Lort Stokes 1850
The Acheron in the distance, dwarfed by the towering mountains of The Narrows in Milford Sound, with Yates Point on the left. In the right foreground is Anita Bay. A large Maori war canoe in the right foreground
Other works by Evans held at A-133/4&5, D-008-002. Also two missing views of Portugal (still missing 1999)
The Narrows lead into the inner part of the fiord. The Maori canoe is likely to have been a piece of artistic licence to give the scale of the fiord. There was no mention in the account of the Acheron's visit to Milford Sound of any encounter with Maori.
