There are many homes and weekend [obscured] obscured by the [obscured]; Verso - bottom left - THE GROWTH OF HASTINGS, from a swamp to a bustling city in less than a century has stemmed largely fromt the fertile Heretaunga Plains of which it is the centre. Orchards, vineyards and extremely fertile pasture and cropping land have resulted in the establishment in Hastings of the Dominion's largest food cannery, the largest fruit-receiving depot, a saleyard, Stortfort Lodge, which sells more livestock than any other centre, and quick-freeze food and wine-making industries: UPPER LEFT: WAIMARAMA BEACH is a favourite weekend and holiday resort of Hastings though it is 22 miles from the city.
