Description: A photograph of a rough tracing of a sketch map, copied in 1841, of an enlarged navigational chart of the Hau Ridi harbour entrance, now known as Napier, and the Hawke Bay, which is the larger of the two maps. Details on the enlarged map include soundings and descriptions of shingle, low water areas, Martha Reef with references to the sinking of the Brig, Martha, and channels for boats going towards You Poo [sic], i.e. Taupo, and Wai Tute Hari {sic], now known as Tutaekuri River and a sketch of a Maori settlement belonging to Ngati Te Whatuiapiti. The second map is of the coast from Hau Ridi to the area north of Tolaga Bay, and includes named islands, Young Nick's Head, Poverty Bay, and various features along the coast. Description: Drawn on a published map, the annotations depict river discharge limits into the sea. A handwritten reference key notes that the blue shaded area denotes river and smooth water limits which covers the area around Napier. At this site on the map a semi-circular pencilled line has been added and another handwritten note states that this is the revised smooth water limit. The red shaded area denotes extended river and partially smooth water limits which covers the bay from Cape Kidnappers across to Portland Island. The green line drawn from Cape Turnagain to Portland Island denotes extreme limits. Two inset base maps are included. One is entitled 'Continuation of the coast from Castle Pt. to Cape Palliser' and includes pencilled and red inked annotations of navigational routes with compass markings.
