Description

Shows a head and shoulders portrait of a young slim Maori woman wearing a large tiki around her neck, shark tooth earrings, and two huia feathers in her hair, which hangs in long ringlets.

Note accompanying the work reads: "The greenstone tiki worn in this portrait was buried with the subject, while the braid and earrings were Lindauer's own props used in some of his other portraits". (AT 10/14, 10 May 2001). Gretchen Sheffield a former owner (AT 10/14, 17 May 2001) states that Lindauer supplied the earrings, feathers, and twill garment but the tiki and gold chain were owned personally by the Princess.

See Maori Land Court Wairarapa minute book no 8, (25 July 1888) pages 153-154, where she states that she lives at Papawai and Te Manihera Rangitakaiwaho was her husband.

Note from John Mohi (AT 10/14, 2 May 2001): "This subject has whakapapa to the whanau of Manihera, Gillies and Jury".

The previous owners' title for this work was 'Princess Ngahui Rangita Kaiwaho', possibly a misinterpretation of Lindauer's inscription on the reverse which reads 'Mrs Ngahui RangitaKaiwaho'

Other Titles - Rangi-Taka-i-Waho

Other Titles - Princess Rangitakaiwaho (former title). Rangita Kaiwaho

Inscriptions: Verso - [Signed, entitled and dated Dec 21st 1880]

Quantity: 1 oil(s).

Physical Description: Oil on canvas, 625 x 520 mm.

Provenance: Gretchen and Malcolm Sheffield, previous owners, purchased the work from Mrs Maata Hirini, in about 1978. Mrs Hirini had received the work from the Church. At the time, the Sheffields were under the impression that Mrs Hirini was the subject's daughter. This was incorrect. She was related to the subject's husband
