- Description
A pair of legs standing at the water's edge at the beach are all that is seen of a person who was expecting a tsunami and is disappointed. A tsunami was predicted for the east coast of Australia but the waves were less than 8 inches high. The earthquake on 15 July 2009 that triggered the tsunami was 7.8 magnitude; it was centred in Fiordland, and was felt widely throughout the South Island and as far north as Taranaki. No major damage was reported, though there were some power outages in the south.
