- Description
In the left foreground a tent, open on one side. Two Maori are seated in its shelter, attending to a pot boiling over a fire. Three Europeans are beside and behind the tent and another Maori man is nearing the group with a bundle of firewood on his back. In the background are Tongariro, Ngauruhoe in eruption and Ruapehu.
Original sketch for the frontispiece of Crawford's book: Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia (London, 1880). "View of Mounts Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Puke Onake and Ruapehu". The trip was in January / February 1862 and the Europeans depicted are Crawford himself and Samuel Deighton, and possibly "poor Biggs who was afterwards killed at Poverty Bay" (p. 134), since Crawford mentions that he joined Crawford and Deighton for part of the journey and there are three Europeans shown.
Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
