Description: In the left foreground a tent, open on one side. Two Maori are seated in its shelter, attending to a pot boiling over a fire. Three Europeans are beside and behind the tent and another Maori man is nearing the group with a bundle of firewood on his back. In the background are Tongariro, Ngauruhoe in eruption and Ruapehu. Original sketch for the frontispiece of Crawford's book: Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia (London, 1880). "View of Mounts Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Puke Onake and Ruapehu". The trip was in January / February 1862 and the Europeans depicted are Crawford himself and Samuel Deighton, and possibly "poor Biggs who was afterwards killed at Poverty Bay" (p. 134), since Crawford mentions that he joined Crawford and Deighton for part of the journey and there are three Europeans shown. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Shows two travellers seated in the right foreground, in front of a long low shelter with a curved roof constructed over wooden poles. In the background, a river flows from left to right, with a low waterfall at the right. The river curves around cliff banks on the far side. There is scattered vegetation including birch trees in the background. Description: Two drawings on one sheet. The upper drawing, Starting on a journey, shows a Maori couple, the man in a short garment with a bundle on his back, the woman seated, about to pick up her bundle and wearing a hat. The lower drawing, Swainson's old house, Rangitikei, shows the farmhouse of Willie Swainson, who took up land in the area in the 1840s or 50s. The house is a simple plank structure, with a verandah on the two visible sides and a high-pitched roof, with roof-beam protruding at either end On same sheet as A-229-055 'Daniell's Rangitikei - Te ara taumai' showing Captain Edward Daniell's farmhouse, near modern Bulls Quantity: 2 drawing(s). Description: A bridge formed of two logs over a swiftly-flowing river between high cliffs. The bridge is being crossed by two Maori, while a European man, (possibly the artist's self-portrait) waits on the near side. Two other Maori are seated near the bank, far left Other Titles - Moawhanga Dated from information provided by Richard Steedman, Taumata Hauora Trust, November 2003, from Taylor's Journal. Taylor made two visits to the upper Rangitikei District , one in March 1845, one in March 1860. This drawing may be from the later visit, since the paper size and media are different from the drawings made during his 11-13 March 1845 visit. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s) in sketchbook..
