Description

Inward and outward correspondence of Thomas Morland Hocken, also transcripts and an autographed note.

1. South Australia. Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery, Adelaide, to Hocken. Dated 22 May 1890. Sending reproductions of old Australian charts.

2. F A Green to Hocken. Dated 23 Oct 1890. Concerning history of Murdering Beach. Reports interview of Kataraina Mape, ca 75 years old, and Hori Te Wahia, ca 90 years old, expressing a different version of the background of the name [Murdering Beach] than Hocken had previously understood.

3. Hocken to W H Triggs. Dated 16 Apr 1908. Concerning Craik's `The New Zealanders'. "...undoubtedly an admirable compilation..."

4. Hocken to Charles Wilson. Dated 14 Sept 1909. In response to Wilson's review of Hocken's bibliography, a copy of which Wilson sent to Hocken. Answers criticisms and discusses Wilson's assessment. A photocopy (negative) and a typewritten transcript of this letter is also included.

5. Hocken. Signed autograph note concerning "Marsden's original manuscript journal which was given to me by his granddaughter, Miss Lizzie Betts of Gladesville, NSW in 1887.

6. Hocken. Photocopy of handwritten transcripts from journal of John Jermyn Symonds, p 321-328, 18 Jun 1849 - 1 Feb 1850.

7. Hocken to Stanley Edwards. Regarding a Maori name for the town of Gore. The place appeared to have no prior place name, but Hocken suggests several Maori words that he deemed suitable names. This is copied from the original which is in the possession of the Royal Commonwealth Society, London, 8 Dec 1976.
