Several reporters are interviewing PM John Key about his concerns over the possibility of an oil spill in New Zealand waters. He says he is not concerned because if he cannot swim at his bach up north he has another one in Hawaii. Refers to the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that BP is having great difficulty stopping, thus causing continuing damage to the wildlife, coastlines and livelihoods of people in four states. Refers also to anxiety about exploratory drilling in New Zealand, eg. Petrobras International Braspetro (PIB BV) has acquired a 100% interest in block 2 in the Raukumara Basin, offshore New Zealand. The move to permit the project comes as something of a surprise, in light of the widespread unpopularity of offshore drilling in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico spill. U.S. President Barack Obama has put a six-month moratorium on new offshore projects.
