Description

The cartoon shows the Beehive as a mediaeval castle on whose battlements are seen the silhouettes of Prime Minister John Key and Finance Minister Bill English holding a bow. In the foreground is a man who represents the 'poor' lying dead with an arrow in his back - the arrow represents the 'budget'. Bill English shouts 'Well... we GAVE it to 'em alright! Ha! Ha!' Refers to the 2010 budget which offered tax cuts which were largely paid for by a rise in GST from 12.5% to 15% which will impact on those with low incomes. Those on higher salary brackets were taxed proportionately less in order to keep them in New Zealand because they are worth more.
