Description: Lantern slides taken by various photographers illustrating labour conditions and atrocities in the Congo Free State ca 1900s, compiled by Harry Holland to supplement lectures. From the 1890s until 1908, the Congo basin was administered as a private estate by King Leopold II of the Belgians, through his International Congo Association. Human rights abuses on his rubber estates attracted internation attention, and in August the Belgian government formally annexed the Congo. Quantity: 56 b&w copy transparency/ies.
