Fox made an official visit to the Kaipara district in 1864, hence the dating of this work.
'Tirirau' was Te Tirarau, d. 1882. His village was at Maraekura, near Tangiteroria, on the Northern Wairoa River, not the Kaipara River. (Information from a researcher, September 2006)
