Description: An album containing photographs taken in Taupo, Rotorua, and Northland, many with Maori subjects. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1909. Many feature short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects including: - Scenes in the Taupo area, such as an urupa (burial ground) on terraces above the Tongariro River, a waka being used as a bridge near Tokaanu, and the `Serpentine Lake' in the Onekeneke valley. - The Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls on the upper Waikato River. - Various geysers and hot pools in the Wairakei Valley. - Maori women at Ohinemutu, cooking and washing clothes. Other women seated and wearing korowai (cloaks) are preparing flax for weaving and mat making. - Landscapes around the Waiotapu thermal area, including rivers, cliffs, and geothermal terraces, and caves near Lake Rotoiti with the caption "Old time Maori caves". - Views taken near Dargaville and Kaihu, including images of stacked timber, rafts of kauri logs on the Wairoa River, and the Wairoa Falls. - Scenic views around Whangarei Harbour, including of the Mushroom Rock, a natural causeway at Manaia, and Whangarei Falls. - Horse and bullock drawn wagons. - Small boats on waterways in the Hokianga Harbour area, including Waipapa River, being towed along by ponies swimming ahead through the water and attached by harnesses. - Scenic views around Whangaroa Harbour, including Pohutakawa trees and rock formation named Ohakiri (St Paul's Rock). - Views near Waitangi, including of the Waitangi Treaty House, mangroves, and the Waitangi Falls. Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album. Relationship complexity: This album relates to PA1-o-1884 and PA1-o-1885 which came to the library at the same time and belongs to the same series of albums which were from the Parliamentary Library. Description: The Wairoa River, Northland, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North in March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - The Northern Wairoa The vice-regal party sailed from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei in HMCS Iris. After a day in Whangarei they drove to the Wairoa River, where they took a steamer to Dargaville. From here they took a steam tug to Pouto, near the North Head of the Kaipara Harbour.
