- Description
A head and shoulders frontal portrait of Sir George Grey. Below is part of the address mentioned, written in Gothic script with rubricated capitals.
Signed: G.H.W.
The image was possibly taken from a photographic likeness of Governor Grey, taken about 1860. Wynyard died in 1861
The text reproduced reads: "We who stand in this country occupy an historical position of extraordinary interest. Before us, lies a future already brilliant with the light of glorious morn. Behind us, lies a night of fearful gloom, unilluminated by the light of written records, of picture memorials, of aught which can give a certain idea of the past. A few stray streaks of light in the form of tradition, of oral poetry, of carved records, are the only guides we have"
Attribution to George Henry Wynyard on the basis of the initials, and the fact that the Wynyard family and Grey were closely acquainted
