The Royal Society is an independent, statutory not-for-profit organisation constituted under the Royal Society of New Zealand Act 1965, and continued by the Royal Society of New Zealand Act 1997. First established in 1867 as the New Zealand Institute. The name was changed to Royal Society of New Zealand from 1933.
