- Description
The cartoon shows St Peter's Basilica in Rome with its central dome in the shape of a condom. There is no text. Context; Pope Benedict XVI stated in 2009 that condoms were not the answer to the aids epidemic in Africa and could make the problem worse. In September 2010 he started a debate when he said some condom use may be justified, raising hopes and fears that the church may be starting to back away from its condom ban for its flock of 1 billion Catholics. In November 2010 Liberal Catholics, AIDS activists and health officials welcomed Pope Benedict's comments that using condoms may sometimes be justified to stop the spread of the disease.
