- Description
Shows Sir Joseph Ward in the centre foreground, riding an old horse "The Grand Old Party", with his dog "Red Fed" on a leash, and leading his followers who walk or ride behind him (one a Passive Resister), and who include Brewer Rabbit. They are looking at a fort at the right, labelled "Government stronghold", built on £4,000,000, with the Otira Tunnel at its right. The stronghold is manned by Sir William Massey waving a flag labelled "The Square Deal", and his followers, Maui Pomare, William Herries, ..., William Fraser, and four others.
Date assumed to be ca 1914 or 1915, because of other Trevor Lloyd political cartoon from 1915 (see C-109-038). "Red Fed" dog represents the Federation of Labour. The Maori figure riding a pig in the left foreground may be James Carroll.
