Description

Shows the leader of New Zealand First appearing as if by magic in a burst of colour and song to awaken two sleeping cats which represent the Maori seats and the Foreshore and Seabed Act. Prime Minister John Key, as a bird, creeps quickly away. Refers to the long period of about six months that Winston Peters has spent away from politics in the wake of his defeat in the 2008 election and the charges of fraud that were laid against him and his recent return. The cartoon suggests an uneasy relationship between National and the Maori Party which is going to be tested over the 'Foreshore and Seabed' issue. The government has agreed to review the legislation made by the previous (Labour) government and the review panel has recommended the act be repealed and that interim legislation should be put in place until MPs work out a way to recognise Maori rights to the foreshore and seabed. Winston Peters believes that they are agrguing about title which will result in some Maori restricting access to the beach.
