Description

Shows Thorndon beach with palisade and several buildings of Pipitea Pa, with a European cottage just beyond the pa. Groups of Maori and several small canoes are on the beach

Engraving no 38 in Brees' "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" published London, 1847.

In his text to "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" Brees notes: "A native Pa is located upon this point, this situation being a favourite one with the maori's [sic] for hauling up their canoes. The Tarerua [Tararua] range of mountains is shown in the distance from whence the river Hutt rises"

The pa was situated on modern Thorndon Quay.
