The cartoon shows a adult son who represents 'mankind' offering a mother's Day present of a can of 'oil slicks' to his mother who represents 'Mother Earth' and already holds gifts of greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. The two people stand up to their knees in oil. Refers to the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that started when a rig sank on 20th April 2010 and that continues to spew from a well that is proving difficult to block and that is threatening wild life, the fishing industry and a huge length of coastline. Refers also to global warming.
