- Description
View from the west bank of the Hutt River, looking across to the east with a bridge on the left, several houses and a church amongst trees. Possibly the earliest view of the beginnings of Lower Hutt.
Inscription on mount: 'The first lithograph executed in Wellington in the year 1842. By Robt. Park, Surveyor to the N.Z.L.Co. ex S. D. Parnell'. The assertion about this being the first lithograph executed in Wellington is not correct. Jones and Bluett lithographed a Chart of Port Nicholson by E M Chaffers in May 1841, followed by other maps in August 1841. They also lithographed W M Smith's view Lambton Harbour and Mount Victoria in June 1841. See The first New Zealand lithographs by R P Hargreaves in Art New Zealand, 24, Winter 1982, p. 50-51
Richmond is said to have been the particular part of the Hutt district where Mr Parnell first asserted the Eight Hours Principle.
