- Description
Shows a profile portrait of the head of a man of Fiji Islands. He is bearded and has a dense spherical bouffant hair style, complete with a straight tusk or horn decoration protruding from the left side of the coiffure, and another decorative addition protruding from the back. He is tattooed across his upper cheek and nose, and wears a necklace with triangular components.
The coiffure has some similarities to that shown in the drawing by Jacques E V Arago, showing a man form New Guinea (Rawack), Mabbeo, Port Dorey, in about 1820 (See Plate 28 in "Voyage de la Corvette L'Astrolabe ..." Paris, 1833 Mitchell Library X980/5l; file print in Drawings Paintings & Prints)
