Description

Collection comprises the private journal of Andrew Thomas H Carbery, dated 1863 to 1865; two commissions appointing Carbey as assistant surgeon to the British army and to the 14th Regiment of Foot in 1858, and a leave of absence dated 1865 which gives Carbery leave of absence from the army starting from 29 June1866 to his retirement from service.

The journal outlines Carbery's activities during this period 1863 to 1865 and comments on the conduct of the war and the Hauhau movement. It also contains miscellaneous anecdotes, verse and sketches.

Also includes a type transcript of the journal created by Andrea Shand in 1958.

Carbery was Assistant Surgeon with the 2nd battalion of the 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. He was based in New Zealand between 1859 and 1866. He saw active service in the Waikato, Auckland and Raglan areas with a detachment (flying column) of the 12th, 14th, 65th and 70th Regiments.

Description: Volume containing diary entries, notes, anecdotes, verse, and drawings written by Andrew Thomas H Carbery recording and reflecting on his time serving as an army surgeon in New Zealand. Entries are dated between 1863 and 1865. The inside front page is annotated in ink "Private journal, [Andrew?] Carbery, [Assistant?] Surgn, Flying Column, New Zealand Nov 1863". Above written in pencil is "Sir J [Ruckland?] 17 Whitehall [guard?]". The first page is headed "Flying Column, Mauku, November 18th 1863". Above this is written in pencil "Editor Chambers' Journal 47 Paternoster Row, London| Cornhill, Smith, Elder & Co 15 Waterloo Place London". 'The Cornhill Magazine' (1860-1975) was a monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal named after the street address of the founding publisher Smith, Elder & Co. it was located at 15 Waterloo Place, London. 'Chambers's Edinburgh' Journal was a weekly 16-page magazine started by William Chambers in 1832. In 1854 the journal moved to London and was known as 'Chambers' Journal'. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Description: Comprises material related to the military service of army surgeon Andrew Thomas H Carbery: - a photocopy of a typescript transcription of the journal of Andrew Thomas H Carbery. Front cover reads "Journal of Andrew Dillon Carberry (this name is crossed out and overwritten in pencil as Andrew Thomas Carbery), Assistant Surgeon, 18th Royal Irish Regiment 1863" and "Copied from original in possession of Mrs Andrea Shand, Christchurch. Through Dr R Stout 1958". - the commission for the appointment of "Andrew Thomas Carbery Gentleman" as Assistant Surgeon " to Our Forces" from 16 November 1858, given on 1 November 1858. The commission bears two embossed paper seals, and is date stamped "London 2.3.64". - the commission for the appointment of "Andrew Thomas Carbery Gentleman" as Assistant Surgeon "in Our Fourteenth Regiment of Foot from the 24th of December 1858".... "Given at court at Saint James's 8 June 1862". The commission bears two embossed paper seals, and is date stamped "London 15.4.63". - a leave of absence document from the Army Medical Department dated 6 July 1865, addressed to "A T Carbery Staff Assistant-Surgeon" in County Cork, Ireland, giving him leave of absence from 29 June 1866 to "date of retirement from the service".
