Description: Describes movements around Sydney, Auckland, Fiji (1861-1862), and participation in the Pukorokoro River blockade (1863). Important episode at Fiji, 27 Jul 1862, having recently arrived at Levuka, Captain Jenkins summoned the chiefs "to a formal meeting on board the Miranda for the purpose of conveying to them the decision of H.M. Ministers not to accept the sovereignty of the Fiji Islands, in terms drawn up by His Excellency Sir John Young". Includes text of declaration in English and Fijian. The Miranda stayed at Levuka most of Jul and Aug; entertained King Thankombau; description of Levuka. Wreck of the `Orpheus' described, Feb 1863. Mainly short log entries but 1863 in some detail; summaries for 1861, 1862 included. Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: In closely-written pages, Card describes in detail his voyage on HMS `Fantome' to Sydney, where he transhipped to the `Havannah' on 24 Nov 1851. He describes his voyages to and around New Zealand, to Fiji and Tonga, before returning to Australia and New Zealand in November 1853, where his captain died. He writes of his life and loves in Sydney and Brisbane from 1854 to Mar 1855, when he is reposted to England. Description: Comprises logs kept by Fenwick: `Duke of Wellington', 27 Jul-28 Sep 1869, on a voyage from Portsmouth to Plymouth; on the `Bristol' 29 Sep 1869-10 Jan 1870 from Plymouth to Barbados, Bermuda and Trinidad; and on the `Clio', 22 Mar-30 Nov 1870, from England which included Madeira, St Vincent to Simon's Bay, to Wellington and Sydney. The `Clio' arrived in Wellington 27 Aug and left 3 Sep. The Duke of Edinburgh was visiting Wellington on the `Galatea' which was in harbour the same time as the `Clio'. Description: Contains a logbook kept by R F Gambier a midshipsman aboard the `HMS Dauntless', commanded by Captain George C Gambier. The log book records the voyage to the Pacific or `South Seas' in 1821-1822, with details of weather conditions encountered. There are also details of landings throughout the Pacific including Huahini, Tahiti. Also included is a night order book kept by RF Gambier while he was commander aboard the `HMS Satellite' and the `HMS Sappho' for voyages aimed at suppressing the slave trade around Africa during the 1840s. Description: Consist mainly of diocesan correspondence with the various mission stations in the Solomon Islands; birth, death and marriage registers from Malageti Station; also, occasional station diaries, research notes on local customs and the history of the diocese. Source of title - Transcribed Following a previous unsuccessful attempt in 1845, missionaries under the auspices of the Oceania Marist Province re-entered the Solomon Islands in 1898 and set up Apostolic Vicariates in the North and South Solomons. A Vicariate of the Western Solomons was established in 1960. After 1967 the Vicariates became known as Dioceses. Includes diary of Giles Holmes, assistant surgeon on the Expedition, descriptions of islands visited, water depths and temperatures, the journal of John Emmons, also on the Expedition, a description of a fatal episode at Malolo, Fiji, newspaper clippings, abstracts of voyage, papers re court martials after the return of the Expedition, and a detailed description of the Antarctic voyage undertaken by the Expedition. Description: Diary kept by H J Young from Nov 1887 to Nov 1889 mostly while on board HMS `Royalist' on a voyage he called `The Cruise of the Evolutionary Squadron'; he also kept a log of the ports called at, noting their arrival and departure with remarks on events in the ports. A personal equipment list is included and some financial records. The diary includes latitude and longitude, length of runs, songs, poems and puzzles which entertained the crews of these voyages, a list of Young's family's birth dates, notes such as addresses of various people and other material. The only recorded event is a battle commanded by Admiral Geoffrey T Phipps Hornby in the Solomon Islands in Jun 1889 which is described in some detail, particularly noting the various vessels involved. The remarks in the log record specific acts by the participants. The log begins with the `Royalist's arrival at Accra and its departure from Simon's Bay, South Africa (17 Nov 1887-5 Sep 1888) when they `Left for Our new Station Australia'; they arrived in Albany 11 Oct 1888 completing the assignment when they left for England 5 Nov 1889. Included in the remarks about the Australian assignment are comments on fighting taking place in various Pacific Islands, particularly the Solomons.
