Panoramic view of Milford Sound with survey ship H. M. S. Acheron on the far right, near Bowen Falls, and a group of Maori on the foreshore.
Has previously been attributed to W. J. W. Hamilton and to John Lort Stokes. However comparison with the style of watercolours known to be by Evans held in the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) and the Hydrographer of the Navy (Taunton) strongly suggest an attribution to Evans.
Reproduced in 1983 as one of the Turnbull Library Prints. The painting was not at that stage attributed to Evans and was published as 'Artist unknown'.
The group of Maori are likely to have been introduced by the artist to give scale and human interest. There is no mention in the accounts of the Acheron's visit to Milford Sound of any Maori presence.
