Description

Reminiscences of Poppleton's time on Campbell Island from 1955 to 1956 and 1958 to 1960. He begins with a short background, his appointment to a position with a team based on Campbell Island and goes on to describe their daily life and routines, weather, work, flora and fauna, health matters and contact with the outside world. A list of the team is provided on page 9; they were Forester Davidson, Vernon Petty, Harry Coleman, Bryan Perkinson, Dave Jamieson and Dave Harrison. Includes a profile of Hans Sebastien Campbell, a German shepherd/fox terrier cross dog required for work by the Campbell Islanders. Also includes description of the preparations and closure of the station in 1995.

Also includes copies of drawings of the buildings, M V `Holmlea' and `Holmglen', plans of the hostel on Campbell Island, of the meteorological office and of Tucker Camp and Cove, the Beeman station, maps of historic sites, philatelic covers collected by Eric Gibbs of Taihape
