The suggested date of 1864 is based on the dating of a watercolour by Barraud, 'Waiting for the ferry at Castle Point, 1864', on sale at the International Art Centre, Auckland, 29 September 1997, lot 87 (illustrated in the catalogue). This suggests that the artist visited Castlepoint either in 1864 or shortly before then.
