- Description
This volume contains McLean's earliest diary, from 17 July to 6 September 1844, recording his activities as Sub-Protector of Aborigines in the Taranaki area. It has also been used as an outwards letterbook and letters from McLean include requests for a list of names of chiefs who have sold land to the New Zealand Company; report on land claimed by New Zealand Company; absent natives disputing Waitara purchase and line of demarcation cut between Maori and European lands, New Plymouth area.
Also includes a brief census of the Maori population of Moturoa, Huatoki and Waiwakaio taken on the 17 October 1844
