Description

A stream in the foreground, with a bullock-led cart about to ford it. Several small houses and one larger one (Sunnyside) set against the Grampian Hills in the middle distance. There is the unfinished pencil outline of another house to the right.

An original smaller brick homestead, known as Wakatu Lodge, was built in Brook Street, Nelson, in 1843 by Alfred Fell. It appears to be hidden behind the trees on the left. The smaller house with smoke coming from its chimney to the left of 'Sunnyside' is likely to be 'Prestbury Lodge' re-built in brick in 1854. The larger house to the right, 'Sunnyside', was built by Alfred Fell, in 1854, and in 1861 bought by Nathaniel Edwards, who had previously worked for Fell. Edwards added a two new wing, a castellated south wing (later demolished) and a ballroom wing (not shown in this view, because the view predates this event). The house was renamed Warwick House in 1896. The grounds of Sunnyside were subdivided shortly after 1900, with the subdivision name Seymour Street. By the (mid?) 20th century the house was also known as 'The Castle' and is now located at 64 Brougham Street, Nelson.
