Powys arrived in Canterbury on the Mermaid in 1866 and farmed near Waipara; at some time after 1867, he may have tried tobacco farming, and in 1872 he was on the Parana River, in either Argentina or Paraguay, apparently as manager of an organized settlement in that region.
