Copy of a photograph from an unidentified book, the original photographer is identified as Claude Meacham. The copy was photographed by Albert Percy Godber in 1903. Image shows four heads of Chinese robbers after beheading, posted on a billboard in Nanking. The negative shows the full inscription from the original book, but the file print shows only the picture.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - "Heads of outlaws posted on a billboard at Nanking. The Chinese consider that the worst form of death is to be beheaded, but if the condemned man faces his execution with contempt and lack of fear, he stands a somewhat better chance of appeasing the anger of his gods. The crime of which these men were convicted was theft. Photograph from Claude Meacham"
