Description: Maxwell Tui Wilkinson born Wellington 1924. Talks about early life, referring to father's hospitalisation with tuberculosis just before the Depression. Describes Hospital Charitable Aid Board and improvements after election of Labour Government in 1935. Discusses work experience on a dairy farm in the Manawatu; scrub cutting in Paraparaumu while waiting to be called for service; experience on sheep station in Martinborough, and with the influence of Rewi Alley, who had visited and corresponded with father, secured a job in China looking after sheep. Refers to help and advice received from Colin Morrison of CORSO. Describes village of Sandan and problems with Kuomintang, a fascist organisation. Mentions George Hogg, an Englishman who was in charge of Sandan school. Talks about changes after liberation in 1949. Talks about the impact of the Korean war. Outlines family background and describes parents efforts to buy painting and paperhanging business in Patea after loosing everything during the Depression. Recalls outbreak of World War II, experiences of brothers, and own experiences working in Lewisham Hospital as a nurse aide, referring to [Sir Archibald] McIndoe (Plastic surgeon) and manpower work making hand grenades. Recalls doing a course at a private design school, leading to job at Nagels factory in Mt Eden; marriage to George Masson an engineer in 1948, and going to Sandan, China. Refers to information from CORSO. Details own life in China and life and conditions of Chinese children. Describes meeting with Rewi Alley and recalls making him a leather skin coat which he constantly wore. Backgrounds starting a business and showing students how to cut etc. - sewing machines being donated from America and sewing needles and machines from schools in New Zealand. Discusses the coming of communist soldiers and the improvement of living standards. Describes attitudes in New Zealand on return from China, setting up a corsetry and lingerie shop in Balmoral and birth of twin boys. Mentions Black Budget in 1967. Description: Personal diaries kept by Mervyn Cull while he was working for the state press agency, Xinhua News Agency, in the Peoples' Republic of China in 1989-1990, and in 1992. The first diary includes commentary on the Tiananmen Square protests and deaths in June 1989. The third diary focuses more on his domestic life. Names selectively indexed. The diaries contain annotations added later by Mervyn Cull to clarify dates and events. Publication - Diaries were used by Cull when writing 'The foreign expert: a New Zealander inside Chinese journalism' (Hazard Press 1977) and 'After me came the Berlin Wall: Lies, spies and journalism' (David Ling, 2006). He also contributed two chapters on his experiences to 'Forty Years On: New Zealand-China relations then, now and years to come' (by Chris Elder, VUP, 2013).
