Description

Shows the Resolution and Discovery in Christmas Harbour, Kerguelen Island in December 1776. A rowboat of seamen is about to land on the shore and one man is already standing on shore. In the foreground is a dead seal or sea-lion being attacked by a large sea-bird, possibly an albatross, and penguins are standing on the beach. There are several large rock formations across the bay, including an arched rock in the distance.

Similar to John Webber's engraving "A view of Christmas Harbour in Kerguelen's Land", published 1784, plate 4 in Cook / King. Joppien/Smith number for this drawing is 3.6

The other drawing referred to is likely to be Ellis's drawing "Christmas Harbour in the Island of Desolation" in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia, ref. no 53/P. Joppien/Smith number for the NLA drawing is 3.5
