Description

View of "Ada", steam locomotive "F" 242, with C Cars, from the collection of William Walter Stewart, taken by an unidentified photographer circa 1873. This image is a film copy negative made by Albert Percy Godber from Stewart's photograph.

There is a print of this image in Albert Percy Godber's album Vol 109, p 106 (PA1-q-102)

Additional notes in Godber's album, added in the 1960s after Godber's death,which read "For possible exact identification see "N.Z. Railway Observer", 19 no. 4, Summer 1962-63, p 140 'First passenger train from Auckland to Onehunga, Dec. 24, 1873'. Alternative identification provided by "Auckland, yesterday and today" published by Milne & Choyce, 1941, p 113 'First train to leave Auckland for the Waikato, 1873'".

"Ada", NZR steam locmotive "F" 242, was built by Stephenson in 1873 (maker's no. 2086/73), went into service in October 1873, and was written off in 1892. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd (1974).
