Description

The cartoon shows Colonel Bainimarama, the Prime Minister of Fiji, dressed in a Nazi-style uniform with the word 'Editor' on the pocket. He turns the crank on a printing press so that blood representing 'freedom' pours out. Refers to sweeping new media controls that provide for five-year jail sentences for journalists, heavy fines, and limits to foreign media ownership. The International Federation of Journalists said it was alarmed that the new media laws propose to invest all power of interpretation over the meaning of fair, balanced and quality journalism to officers appointed by the Bainimarama regime.
