- Description
The cartoon shows a 'family' comprising of PM John Key, his 'wife' Gerry Brownlee Minister of Energy and Resources and their 'boy' who represents the 'Power Co's'. The boy is screwing another boy who represents 'consumers' with a giant screw that represents 'ETS'. 'Father' John Key warns him not to 'slip and gouge him'. Refers to the start of New Zealand's ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) on 1st July which has resulted in prices for many goods and services rising - in this case electricity. 'A warning shot has been fired at power companies just days before they increase bills, with Prime Minister John Key warning them not to use the controversial Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) as an excuse to 'gouge' more money out of customers. Power companies are putting up their prices to help cover the cost of penalties they will pay for emitting greenhouse gases under the ETS, which affects them from Thursday 1st July.' (quote TVNZ)
