Description

The cartoon is headed 'Brain wave' as a salute to the fact that the topic is neurosurgery. Health Minister Tony Ryall is caricatured surrounded by notes showing how the cartoonist could improve his appearance. Text reads 'Cartoonist's pledge - If Tony Ryall, the Health Minister retains the neurological unit at Dunedin Hospital... Chicane promises to make the following alterations to future caricatures.' Some of the notes read as follows... 'less egg shaped head,' 'smarter Armani suits,' 'trustworthy understanding kind appearance.' In a second version The words 'Stop the great brain robbery!' appear up the right-hand side of the cartoon. Currently both Christchurch and Dunedin provide neurosurgical services, but with the five South Island district health boards (DHBs) agreeing the South Island would be best served by having one hospital providing them, one will be forced to give up. There have been large protests led by the mayors of Dunedin and Invercargill. A report on the issue is due to be presented to Health Minister Tony Ryall in October.
