- Date
- 2010

- Description
The cartoon shows Prime Minister John Key 'explaining' the 'Whanau Ora'. He holds in one hand a paper reading 'Exclusive to Maoris' and in the other a paper reading 'And non Maori'. He says 'On the one hand.... and on the other..' Refers to the controversial Whanau Ora initiative which would mean private organisations would take over health and social service needs of families within their own communities. Maori Party Co-Leader Tariana Turia, who has spearheaded the programme, would like Whanau Ora to benefit Maori in the first instance but John Key says that won't be the case. He says the policy will be based on need, not race.
