Ink drawing of a costume, consisting of a large pointed helmet and grass skirt worn by the men of New Ireland. The top is tall, four-sided and completed covers the head, resting on the shoulders, while the attached grass or reeds reach the man's knees. From the grass on the right appears the man's hand holding a long fine spear.
Drawing made on the spot by Blosseville, with his signature lower left, and partly used as the basis for an engraving by Tardieu for publication as a plate in Duperrey, L I 'Voyage... sur la Coquille... 1822... 1825... Histoire du voyage. Atlas' (Paris, Arthur Bertrand, 1826) (fr910.4).
Inscriptions: Recto - J de Blosseville.; Recto - left of image - notes by artist including, in ink, 'Voyage de la Coquille' and in pencil '35 poids de pesanteur' and 'la lance pointue ... 6 pieds' [references to the weight of the headdress shown and the length of the native lance]; also in ink above image, title, and to the right, in ink 'Nota. Les figures en noir doivent paraitre en blanc sure le trellis' [the figures in blank may appear in white on the grating, apparently a reference to the decorated eye-holes of the headdress shown]
