Description: Photographs taken by Fortune, previously filed with his research papers on the New Guinea Highlands, which covered two trips spanning 1930s to 1950s. Predominantly images of the Kamano and Fore people of the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea including men, women, and children. Posed portraits, and informal images showing people gathering together, and working. Shows landscape and various thatched buildings and structures. People mainly in traditional dress with some wearing western clothing. Some images relating to kuru disease and victims. Also includes images featuring animals, cigarettes, tools, and food. Some images are taken onboard a ship. Fortune visited Papua New Guinea in 1927, 1932-1933, 1935, 1951-1952, 1959, and 1970-1971. Description: Shows a standing man of Admiralty Island, Papua New Guinea. He is holding a lime bottle in his right hand (used for dipping betel leaves into, before chewing). He has a paddle in his left hand, with a fish tooth bound to his upper left arm. There is tattooing (including raised bumps) on his upper body and a shell hides his genitals. Description: Photographs of Manus people include portraits of men such as the war leader Korotan of Pere and Isole the medium. There are views of the village of Pere built on polls over water, adults and children in canoes, people bringing gifts of pots and grass skirts in canoes, a family group, and a bridal party in a canoe. There are four identified Arapesh photographs which include a plains Arapesh man cutting a bracelet from a trocas shell, a teenage boy, a bowman, and a painted Tamberan house. Included in this envelope are also a group of unidentified photographs. Arrangement: Original Manus negatives at 1/2-230424-F to 1/2-230427-F, and 1/2-230418-F. Original Arapesh negatives at 1/2-230300-F to 230350-F. Quantity: 30 b&w original photographic print(s). Processing information: Though prints and negatives came from envelopes with specific titles, they were to some extent mixed. Description: Shows three standing figures: the first, a frontal portrait of a man wearing large loop earrings and a nose ring. He is holding a lime bottle in his right hand (used for dipping betel leaves into, before chewing). He has a paddle in his left hand. The middle figure, the Tongan dancer, wears a wreath around her waist and holds a patterned wrap around her hips and legs, and her posture is as though she is swaying. The figure on the right shows another Tongan woman, with tattoos on her shoulders and upper arm, and possibly in a necklace shape. She leans her head to her left on her shoulder, and holds her hands over her breasts and the draped garment she wears. Description: Shows a portrait of the head and shoulders of a man of Arfak (probably on the Doberei Peninsula of Western Irian Jaya). The hairstyle is composed of rounded clumps, and a thin strip of cloth is tied around the head amongst them. The man wears a large nose ring and large earrings, rings encircling his upper arms, and a necklace with pendant.
