Three brown and yellow butterflies, two shown in flight, and one feeding on a sunflower. According to the artist's notes 'Feeds on Crosswort and sun flower, frequents the Oak Woods of Burkes County but is not common'.
Butterfly identified by John Calhoun (USA), February 2003, as Order: Lepidoptera; Family: Nymphalidae; Species: Chlosyne gorgone (Huber); Contemporary common name: Gorgone Checkerspot. Plant identified as Family: Asteraceae; Species: Helianthus divaricatus L.; Contemporary common name: Woodland sunflower

Letter from John Calhoun (AT 13/14/1, 12 November 2002) says that this is a copy by Abbot from his original drawing (made ca 1804). He also made a later drawing ca 1820, omitting the plant and the male butterfly.
