Contains letters from Maori to Colenso about the erection of chapels, reports about the activities and plans of Maori teachers, parishioners and others, reports of illnesses and deaths, requests for religious texts, medicines and other items, and the loss of faith among Kai Tahu people because of the misdeeds of their Maori teachers; also contains letters that relate to the New Zealand Wars (Taranaki theatre) and the Pai Marire religion, including a letter from Titokowaru asking for reinforcements; also includes a letter written by Pomare V, king of Tahiti
